Promethazine is a phenothiazine antihistamine, and can also be used for antiemetic, anti-motion sickness and sedative hypnosis.
1. Antihistamine effect: it competes with histamine released by tissues for H1 receptors, can antagonize the contraction or contracture of histamine on the smooth muscle of the gastrointestinal tract, trachea, bronchus or bronchioles, and relieve the spasm and congestion caused by histamine on the bronchial smooth muscle effect.
2. Antiemetic effect: It may be related to the suppression of the emetic chemosensory area of the medulla oblongata.
3. Anti-motion sickness: It may act on the vestibular and vomiting center and midbrain medulla receptors through the central anticholinergic properties, mainly to block the excitement of cholinergic synaptic labyrinth impulses in the vestibular nucleus.
4. Sedative and hypnotic effect: It may indirectly reduce the stress of the brainstem reticulum ascending activation system.
