1. Treat indigestion
In Europe, artichoke has long been used as an herbal remedy for indigestion. Artichoke extract is used to treat gastrointestinal ailments including abdominal pain, bloating, and nausea.
2. Hypolipidemia and anti-atherosclerosis
Many experiments have shown that artichoke extract can reduce blood lipids, mainly by affecting the synthesis and decomposition pathways of cholesterol and lipids in the liver to regulate lipid levels, thereby preventing the occurrence of atherosclerosis.
3. Liver protection and antioxidant function
Studies on the antioxidant function of artichoke mostly focus on leaf extracts. The antioxidant capacity of polyphenolic compounds isolated and extracted from artichoke was found to be mainly determined by the number of hydroxyl groups on the aromatic ring. The more hydroxyl groups contained, the stronger the antioxidant capacity. In addition, the second hydroxyl groups located in the ortho and para positions can also increase its antioxidant capacity. The test results showed that the EC50 values of 1 g dried artichoke extract on DPPH and FRAP were comparable to 29.2 mg and 62.6 mg VC, and 77.9 mg and 159 mg VE, respectively, and had a good anti-LDL oxidation effect. .
Antioxidant assay results in rat hepatocytes in vitro showed that 0.001 mg/ml of the aqueous extract could reduce the content of MDA without affecting glutathione (GSH) levels in hepatocytes, but instead reduced the loss of GSH and GSSG of the loss. Indicates that artichoke extract has a strong antioxidant effect. Therefore, it is inferred that the antioxidant effect of the extract is the main reason for its hepatoprotective and liver regeneration promotion effects.
4. Antimicrobial effect
The antimicrobial activities of chlorogenic acid, artichoke acid, luteolin-7-rutinoside and artichoke glycoside in artichoke were relatively high, and the antifungal activity was stronger than the antibacterial activity.
5. Other Values
Artichoke leaf extract, especially the flavonoids in it, can regulate the gene expression of NO enzyme in human epithelial cells and promote the synthesis of NO, thereby preventing the occurrence of cardiovascular diseases. Artichoke bittern contained in artichokes has antispasmodic properties. In addition, artichoke can also improve peristalsis, promote intestinal wall contraction, so that substances in the intestine can be transported faster, thereby preventing constipation.
