Octenidine dihydrochloride (N,N'-(1,1 0-Decandiyldi-1 (4-H)-pyridynyl-4yliden)bis(1-octanamine)- dihydrochloride - CAS No 70775-75-6) is an antiseptic agent intended for use in all mammalian food producing species for skin and mucosal disinfection and short-term supportive antiseptic wound treatment as a 0.1% aqueous solution for cutaneous use. Octenidine dihydrochloride has been used as an antiseptic agent in human medicine.
Due to its special effect on adhesion and synthesis of chemical cell components and high antibacterial activity on the whole cell, octenidine dihydrochloride (Otenidine) may be considered as a unique antimicrobial agent. It exerts its activity through no cytotoxic synthesis at the point of action. Therefore, octenidine is not considered a typical preservative, like chlorhexidine or polyvinyl ketone iodine.
Otenidine shows a broad-spectrum antibacterial effect against Gram-positive and negative bacteria and fungi. This effectiveness will not be affected by interfering substances (such as blood, mucus). Otenidine has a strong residual effect on the skin, which can still be observed 24 hours after application.
Because octenidine has excellent antimicrobial efficacy and histocompatibility, octenidine can be used for different rapid topical applications and exert the necessary long-acting effects.
